Closed tender announced in Armenia for introducing MNP service

YEREVAN, September 9. /ARKA/. Union of operators providing mobile number portability (MNP) services announced a closed tender for a centralized database for introducing MNP services and selecting companies, the press office of the Union reported.

The MNP service allows subscribers maintaining their telephone number when turning from one mobile operator to another. It will be introduced in Armenia under the amendments to the country’s law about communications as from 2014. At its meeting of July 17, Armenia’s public services regulatory commission set rules for MNP service and decided the service will be free for subscribers.

The union of Operators Providing Mobile Number Portability services was founded on July 30 by K-Telecom, ArmenTel and Orange Armenia to create a centralized database and ensure accessibility of MNP in Armenia.

The MNP service was first introduced in Hong Kong in 1995. After the MNP service was used in Europe, tariffs dropped by an average of 4% for mobile communication and by up to 11% for landline. –0--
