YEREVAN, October 22. /ARKA/. The Armenian Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems is coordinating an international research project in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) called WARIE, which has a budget of over €4.2 million. The four-year project brings together 13 scientific and educational organizations from seven countries and is funded by the European Union’s "Horizon Europe" program, according to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia.

The official launch of the project took place with the participation of Armenia’s Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Zhanna Andreasyan.

Armenia Coordinates International Consortium

The WARIE project aims to expand research and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence and to develop the scientific capacity of the Eastern Partnership countries. It is being implemented as part of the "European Excellence Initiative" under the Horizon Europe program.

The consortium comprises 13 research institutions and higher education establishments from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Sweden. Yerevan State University is also participating in the project on the Armenian side.

According to the Ministry, only about 10% of the 284 submitted applications were selected for funding.

Investment in AI Research and Infrastructure

The project includes the establishment of interdisciplinary centers for advanced research in artificial intelligence, the development of research management systems, and the creation of digital infrastructure aligned with the principles of "open science."

A specific focus is placed on expanding professional development opportunities for young researchers and strengthening international scientific cooperation.

The project is set to run for four years. The ministry’s statement does not specify how the budget is distributed among the organizations participating in the consortium.

Armenia’s participation in European scientific programs

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Armenia’s Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Zhanna Andreasyan, announced that over the past five years, Armenian organizations have entered into 31 grant agreements under the Horizon Europe program, with a total budget of approximately €10.7 million.

According to her, state funding for science in Armenia has nearly tripled compared to 2018.

Andreasyan noted that the strategic development program for Armenia’s scientific sector for 2026–2030 includes the modernization of research infrastructure, the development of human capital, the expansion of the practical application of scientific results, and further integration into the international scientific system.
