YEREVAN, October 12. /ARKA/. Armenia and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) have discussed opportunities for cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum computing, joint scientific research, and specialist training. This was announced by the Ministry of High-Tech Industry of the Republic of Armenia following a visit to Spain by Deputy Minister Gevorg Mantashyan.
During the visit to BSC-CNS, the Armenian delegation was introduced to the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer—one of Europe's leading supercomputing systems—as well as three quantum computers integrated with it.
The newest of these, EuroQCS-Spain, was put into operation in 2026. This infrastructure enables the integration of classical high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.
The parties also discussed plans for developing the next-generation MareNostrum 6 supercomputer, including the use of European-designed semiconductor chips and issues regarding technological autonomy.
Particular attention was paid to BSC-CNS's experience in building a research, educational, and innovation ecosystem around its computing infrastructure. Discussions covered opportunities for expert exchanges, joint applied research, and the implementation of educational programs involving Armenia. According to the source, representatives of the center responded positively to these proposals.
The visit also included an examination of the BSC AI Factory initiative; the center's experience in this area is of interest for the development of the "AI Virtual Institute" and "Garden of AI Factories" projects currently being implemented in Armenia. A meeting at the Computer Vision Center (CVC) focused on cooperation in computer vision, applied artificial intelligence, technology transfer, intellectual property protection, and the commercialization of research findings.
Additionally, the Armenian delegation participated in the Barcelona New Economy Week (BNEW) international event. Meetings with representatives from Tech Barcelona, as well as Spanish economic and investment entities, explored opportunities for fostering technological cooperation and innovation ecosystems, and for attracting Spanish investment to Armenia.
Spanish partners were invited to participate in the Silicon Mountains and DigiTec technology events scheduled for November in Armenia.
During the visit, the parties established professional contacts and discussed avenues for future collaboration regarding AI infrastructure, research, and technology partnerships.
