YEREVAN, March 26. /ARKA/. Yerevan City Hall intends to restore the "Kanaz" Community Center, which caught fire the day before, Mayoral Press Secretary Artem Karapetyan announced on Facebook.

According to him, the building was returned to the Yerevan community by court order in 2024. Prior to this, since 2017, the building had been managed by the ‘’Azbuka Iskusstva’’ cultural foundation, which failed to make the promised investment of 480 million drams (over $1.2 million) over 10 years, leaving the building in poor condition.

Reconstruction work on the building has not yet begun after the restoration of community ownership. Karapetyan also noted that trespassers periodically entered the building, broke the locks, and caused damage, after which the doors were locked again. He reported that the fire left the building's façade undamaged, with the main damage occurring to the roof and interior.

As Karapetyan noted, the restoration of the "Kanaz" Community Center is a pressing issue for the Yerevan Municipality.

"The new project envisages preserving the building's architectural appearance, while its function will remain the same—an educational space for children. According to the new concept, the facility will be converted into a STEAM center—a multifunctional space integrating science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics," the press secretary stated.

The fire at the "Kanaz" Community Center occurred on the evening of March 26. Thirteen fire and rescue teams responded to the scene, extinguishing the fire in approximately 4.5 hours. There were no injuries, and a criminal case has been opened under Article 264 of the Criminal Code (destruction of or damage to property by arson, explosion, or other generally dangerous means).
