YEREVAN, June 25. /ARKA/. Artificial intelligence will become one of the key forces transforming the global economy, and digital transformation is creating new opportunities for Armenia, according to Nobel Prize laureate in economics Daron Acemoglu.
"It's clear that artificial intelligence will be a transformative force, and the consequences could be both very positive and very negative. But today, no one knows exactly what they will be," Acemoglu said, answering a question from the ARKA news agency on the sidelines of the EDB's 20th anniversary forum in Almaty.
According to him, artificial intelligence is already beginning to impact employment in industrialized countries and will further change the global division of labor and have a significant impact on the education system.
"We need to adapt much more quickly to the era of artificial intelligence—both in education and in how we organize our lives," the economist stated.
Speaking about Armenia's prospects, Acemoglu noted that the country possesses different competitive advantages than most countries in the region.
"Armenia is very different from other Central Asian countries because it lacks natural resources, so its comparative advantage is different. I think digital transformation creates new opportunities for Armenia," he said.
At the same time, according to the economist, the small size of the economy, limited domestic market, and isolation from natural markets remain serious challenges for the country.
Speaking about the global economy, Acemoglu noted that geopolitics and artificial intelligence are changing existing economic balances. He noted that some developing countries may face additional difficulties, while others will be able to use the development of AI to accelerate their development.
