YEREVAN, 16 October. /ARKA/. International human rights organisation Freedom House has ranked Armenia in the category of countries with ‘free internet’.

Armenia has slightly improved its position (74 points out of 100 compared to 72 points a year earlier).

‘Armenia's online environment remains open, improving from 1 June 2023 to 31 May 2024, as the government has not blocked websites or social media platforms. However, the government has detained people for criticising the executive online, and individuals in the country have often been subjected to spyware attacks,’ Freedom On The Net's 2024 report said.

It notes that in March 2024, podcast hosts Vazgen Saghatelyan and Narek Samsonyan were detained on hooliganism charges and sentenced to two months in pre-trial detention after they published an episode insulting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

‘Internet is widely available in the capital Yerevan and is expanding across the country. The reliability and speed of internet connections across Armenia have generally improved in recent years. Public Wi-Fi is fairly accessible in Yerevan but limited in other cities,’ the report said.

Georgia was also among the countries with free internet (74 points). And other states in the region are listed among countries with ‘non-free internet’ - Azerbaijan (34 points), Iran (12 points) and Turkey (31 points). -0-
