Armenia may start production of electric cars
YEREVAN, February 4. /ARKA/. Armenia may start production of electric vehicles, Vahagn Sahakyan, the chairman of the Union of Taxi Companies, told reporters on Tuesday. According to him, taking into account the huge number of cars imported to Armenia and the low demand for them at the local market, the possibilities of their disposal should be explored.
He said one cannot just leave obsolete cars to live out their lives, thereby clogging the environment, in addition, importers made quite serious investments and, therefore, ways should be found to get out of this situation. As a possible solution to the problem, he indicated the possibility of converting them into electric vehicles.
"The electric motor is the heart of the electric car, and at the initial stage such motors can be imported from other countries to be installed in such cars, and later the possibility of launching their production in the country could be considered," Sahakyan said.
He said this project is quite realistic if, for example, the country imposes restrictions on the export of raw copper, which after processing in the country can be used in the manufacturing of electric motors.
This, he said, will not only solve the problem with imported cars, but also attract foreign investors who would like to take part in creating such a business.
The head of the State Revenues Committee David Ananyan said earlier that as many as 189 thousand cars were imported to Armenia in 2019 compared to 64 thousand in 2018. -0-
