Armenia’s First Green Energy Incubator Launches: €40,000 Fund Opened for Up to 15 Clean-Tech Startups

YEREVAN, July 7. /ARKA/. The Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises (UATE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) have officially launched the Green Tech Academy, establishing Armenia’s first dedicated incubation program for renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) startups.

The initiative kicked off following its inaugural Advisory Board meeting at the UATE office in Yerevan, where industry leaders, ministry officials, and academic heads mapped out the core operational problems that the academy's participants will be tasked with solving. The board explicitly prioritized critical sector bottlenecks, including solar panel waste management, outdated electric grids, lack of standardized data collection, acute shortage of energy audit specialists and automation, inefficiencies in solar infrastructure maintenance, lack of scalable battery and grid storage systems, and existing clean-energy policy gaps.

The program offers a highly competitive opportunity for up to 15 selected startup teams to advance through a structured technical and business training pipeline. To accelerate these solutions to market, the academy features a total prize fund of €40,000, which will be strategically rewarded as a stipend to the top-performing teams during the September hackathon and the final Demo Day.

Who Can Apply

Implemented under the SE4Resilience program - co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) - the academy places heavy emphasis on regional development, hosting specialized offline information sessions across five primary regional hubs: Yerevan, Gyumri, Gavar, Goris, and Ijevan.

The academy welcomes applications from both standalone individual applicants and existing teams, with individual innovators formed into collaborative startup teams during the early phases of the program. The academy is opening applications to a broad spectrum of participants, including university graduates and students (ages 16 and older), engineers, software developers, environmental scientists, energy sector participant companies, individual industry professionals, and public sector representatives interested in driving energy efficiency and clean-tech solutions. The program also maintains a dedicated mandate to increase women’s participation and leadership across the energy entrepreneurship sector.

Advisory Board & Mentorship

The event opened with welcoming remarks from Edita Ghazaryan, Executive Director of UATE, followed by an opening address from Sirvard Nshanyan, Strategic Energy Advisor at GIZ Armenia. The launch also highlighted the instrumental role of Olga Weigel, Project Manager at GIZ, whose leadership in designing and enabling the initiative was critical to its realization; she additionally shared her insights on the program's strategic vision.

The newly convened 9-member Advisory Board will remain highly active throughout all stages of the program - directly helping, mentoring, and educating the teams to transform raw ideas into market-ready solutions. The board brings together Edita Ghazaryan (Executive Director, UATE), Sirvard Nshanyan (Strategic Energy Advisor, GIZ Armenia), Hovhannes Abrahamyan (Head of the Energy Department, Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, represented at the meeting by Aida Adamyan, Head of the Energy Efficiency and Technical Norms Division), Hayk Igityan (Head of the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Laboratory, National Polytechnic University of Armenia), Lana Asatryan (Head of Human Resources Management, Electric Networks of Armenia CJSC), Hayk Shekyan (CEO, Shtigen), Hovhannes Karapetyan (CEO, Team Energy LLC), Karen Nersisyan (Director, Arega Energy & Synex Energy), and Vardan Urutyan (Founder and Executive Director, Armenian Institute for Digital Agriculture). To ensure a highly professional environment, additional industry players, universities, and institutions will also join the initiative to provide continuous technical validation and ecosystem support.

Program Timeline

●      July & August 2026: Regional Info Sessions for prospective applicants across the five target hubs.

●      August, 2026: Preparatory 21-hour Bootcamp.

●      September 2026: A national Hackathon to select the final incubator cohort.

●      October – December 2026: Three-month intensive business and technical incubation for the chosen 15 startup teams.

●      January 2027: Demo Day, featuring the final funding allocations from the prize fund to the top three graduating startups.
