YEREVAN, September 20. / ARKA /. A new information portal in Western Armenian at Yerakouyn.com will be launched on September 21, when Armenians mark Independence day.

Nairi Mgrdichian, the head of the portal, told ARKA that the main purpose of the portal is the preservation and development of the Western Armenian language.

We hope that Yerakouyn.com will serve this cause,’ Mgrdichian said.

Portal creator Khazhak Mgrdichian is former editor of Armenian diaspora publications Gandzasar (Syria), Husaber (Egypt) and Hayrenik (USA).

The Armenian literary language has two main branches - Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian. The Eastern Armenian is spoken in the Republic of Armenia and by the Armenian communities in Iran and India.

West-Armenian is spoken by Diaspora Armenians in North and South Americas, Europe and the Middle East as well as in the southern regions of Russia by Armenians from the Crimean peninsula and Hamshens (originating from Hamshen in Western Armenia, now in Turkey).

Accoridng to 2009 UNESCO Atlas of the World's Endangered Languages Western Armenian was listed as "definitely endangered in Turkey'." -0-
