YEREVAN, March 5. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government approved a change to the engine power calculation methodology used to determine property taxes for electric vehicles.

The changes will take effect on April 1, 2026.

"Today, many electric vehicle owners pay higher property taxes than they should because of a calculation mechanism that often fails to reflect the actual engine power," said Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan.

According to her, the new methodology involves using a value approximately corresponding to the effective or 30-minute steady-state power, instead of the current maximum or peak power.

According to the new draft, if an electric vehicle has an electronic vehicle registration document registered in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) database, the engine power specified therein will be used in the calculation.

If an electronic passport is not available, the calculation will be based on the following formula:
- engine power up to 250 horsepower divided by a factor of 1.5;
- if the power exceeds 250 horsepower, the first 250 horsepower is divided by a factor of 1.5, and the remaining 250 horsepower is divided by a factor of 2.5.

"For example, for a 2025 electric vehicle with a 218 horsepower engine, the property tax could be reduced from approximately 133,000 drams to approximately 43,000 drams," Sargsyan said.

The changes will also apply to already registered electric vehicles. Owners will be able to view updated information about their vehicles on their personal pages on the Roadpolice platform.
