YEREVAN, May 15. /ARКА/. Japanese scientist, LOCOMTEC AIPS Artificial Intelligence Laboratory President, AIPLAB consortium founder Yoshiaki Damon Hagiwara has been awarded the 2024 Armenian State Prize "For Global Contribution to High Technology Development".

The award was presented to Dr. Hagiwara by RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a ceremony in Yerevan.

Thanking the laureate for his contribution to the global technological sphere, Pashinyan stressed that with this award, Armenia pays tribute to those individuals who have had a specific impact on the formation of modern life.

"And this, in a sense, also reflects the format of our participation in these global processes, which we consider very important. Of course, the arrival of figures of such scale in Armenia, their contacts with our students, business community, technology sector, I think, is an important and additional incentive for the development of the technology sector in our country,” the Prime Minister added.

He noted the importance of having an educational infrastructure in the country, which is an absolute priority for the Armenian government. "We are implementing very serious programs in the field of education - preschool, general education, higher education, postgraduate education, science and technology," Pashinyan said.

Dr. Hagiwara expressed gratitude for the high appreciation of his activities and the award of the State Prize of Armenia. In his speech, the scientist emphasized the importance of developing the high-tech sector and the consistent implementation of programs in the field of education.

Yoshiaki Damon Hagiwara is the founder of the AIPLAB consortium, president of the LOCOMTEC AIPS Laboratory for Partnership Systems of Artificial Intelligence, a lifetime fellow and permanent member of the IEEE, a member of AAIA, as well as a member of IEEE EDS, IEEE SSCS, IEEE CS, IEEE Superconductivity Council, IEEE Nanotechnology Council, IEEE Sensor Council, and IEEE Systems Council.

As a distinguished alumnus of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena (USA), Hagiwara received his doctorate (PhD) in electrical engineering in the field of physics in 1975. While at Sony from 1975 to 2008, he was involved in the early development of image sensors and digital camera chipsets including DC, DRAM high-speed Cache SRAM buffer memory chips, microcontroller chips, and high-performance real-time processors. In 1992, he was a member of the JEDEC Memory Standards Committee and also served as the Chairman of the Technical Committee (IEC) TC47 of the International Standards Committee (IEC). 

Hagiwara also served as the Chairman of the International Program Committee and a member of the Operations Committee of the IEEE Electronic Instrumentation Society (EDS)-sponsored ICMTS conferences and the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society (SSCS)-sponsored ISSCC conferences, where he also served as the Chairman of the IEEE ISSCC Asia Committee and the Chairman of the ISSCC International Technical Program (ITC).

He has been a Visiting Professor in the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), a Visiting Professor in the Department of in Electrical Engineering from Gunma University in Kiryu, Japan, a professor in the Department of Information Science and Technology at Sojo University in Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan, and currently serves as a specially appointed professor in the office of the president of Sojo University.

In 2008, he founded the AIPLAB consortium and served as the president of the Artificial Intelligence Partner System (AIPS) laboratory. He continues to serve as the president of the LOCOMTEC AIPS laboratory in Atsugi, Japan, developing system solutions for AI Robot Clean Energy SDGs.

Hagiwara was the chairman of the Education Committee of the Society of Semiconductor Industry Professionals (SSIS) and continues to be a member of the Society to this day.
