Armenia must switch completely to Unicode Armenian fonts

YEREVAN, June 20. /ARKA/. Armenia must switch completely to Armenian fonts in Unicode format, Microsoft Armenia Office head, Grigor Barseghyan, said today.

"Today, many public agencies, as well as commercial organizations are still using an outdated coding system ASKII, which had long been ceased to be used in the world, and this creates recognition problems of Armenian fonts on the Internet," he said.

According to him, there are converters that convert fairly successfully ASKII to Unicode, but problems still arise when formatting the data, in particular tables.

He said complete switch to Unicode, including the use of KDWin is the way out.

"There was a government decision requiring that state agencies shift to Unicode Armenian encoding but the problem still remains," Barseghyan said. He also called for financial incentives for creation of Armenian fonts, because today this process is maintained only due to enthusiasm of several individuals. -0-
