Armenia has joined the Council of Europe framework convention on artificial intelligence

YEREVAN, December 30. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Friday, the Armenian government approved the signing of the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law.
The rationale for this decision states that the convention was opened for signature on September 5, 2024, in Vilnius. This is the first international legal document aimed at ensuring the protection of fundamental human rights in the field of AI.
“Considering that the Republic of Armenia does not yet have sufficient legal regulations in this area, signing the Convention will provide an opportunity to develop a legal framework related to the use of artificial intelligence through close cooperation with international partners,” the rationale states.
On May 17, 2024, the Council of Europe adopted its first legally binding agreement—the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law—during the annual meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, which brings together the foreign ministers of 46 member states.
The Convention, which is also open for accession by countries outside Europe, covers all aspects of the use and risks associated with AI in the context of human rights, respect for democratic standards, and the rule of law.
Parties will be required to take measures to identify, prevent, and mitigate possible risks associated with AI technologies and consider restrictions or prohibitions where the use of technologies poses risks to human rights standards.
