YEREVAN, December 30. /ARKA/. Astronomer Avetik Grigoryan, co-founder of the Bazoomq space research laboratory, who designed the first Armenian satellite, has been awarded the "Hero of Our Time" award.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan presented the award to Grigoryan at the awards ceremony held yesterday at the Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan.
About the Laboratory and the Space Satellite
Bazoomq Space Research Laboratory was founded in 2020 in Yerevan by a group of members of the Armenian Aerospace Society (AYAS) with the goal of developing scientific research, education, and the startup ecosystem in the space sector in Armenia.
In 2023, Bazoomq, in collaboration with the Center for Scientific Innovation and Education (CSIE), created Hayasat-1, the first satellite designed and assembled in Armenia. The miniature 1U CubeSat (weighing approximately 1 kg and measuring 10 x 10 x 10 cm) was launched into low Earth orbit on December 1, 2023, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
The satellite successfully operated in orbit and transmitted data to Earth about its operation in the space environment, completing the active phase of its mission in April 2025. According to the laboratory, the mission provided valuable information and experience that are important for the design of future Armenian satellites, enhancing the resilience of onboard systems, and conducting scientific and educational research.
